km) north of Cairns in the heart of the Daintree World Heritage area,
famous for its unique lowland tropical rainforest.
Drive north out of Cairns along the Bruce Highway (Hwy 1)
through sugarcane and forest covered mountains to Smithfield (10 minutes). Do not take the Kauranda turnoff but continue on Highway 44 towards Port Douglas/Mossman past Ellis Beach (25 mins) and Rex Lookout, which has fantastic views east
across the Coral Sea. Continue on past the Port Douglas turnoff to Mossman,
a sugar town which is the regional centre, one hour north of Cairns.
From Mossman continue north on the main highway past Wonga
Beach (15 minutes from Mossman) and 10 km later turn right to reach the
Daintree River ferry. Cross over on the ferry and continue to the top
of the Alexander Range where the Wulu Wigirrega lookout has stunning views
back across the forest, Daintree River mouth and Coral Sea to Port Douglas.
Continue down through rainforest to the small township of
Cow Bay which boasts a pub, several restaurants, a backpackers, a general
store and an airstrip for light planes. Turn right off the main Cape Tribulation
road toward Cow Bay beach and then right again after 2 km up Silkwood
Road. The Epiphyte is located halfway up a hill on the left at the end
of Silkwood road.
